Publication detailsAbout the book
The message, its makers, and its lasting meaning
In 1977, each Voyager spacecraft carried a Golden Record of sounds and images chosen to introduce Earth to whoever might encounter it. Making that message meant deciding how to represent a whole world in one small, lasting artifact.
Voyager’s Golden Record brings together Jon Lomberg’s firsthand account as the Record’s Design Director with Glen Swanson’s space history and Deana Weibel’s cultural analysis. It follows the Record from the ideas and practical choices behind its creation to its enduring life in art and the public imagination.

From the book
A message to the stars, a reflection on Earth
“This was not a message from NASA, or the United States, after all, but a message from Earth.”
“…like gifts waiting to be opened, full of music and maps, biological explanations and glimpses of culture.”
“After all, what good is a message in a bottle if the bottle survives but the message does not.”
